Tähelepanu, valmis, läks ... Design 101

it was our first mail sent to you, and (as you could notice), we made some mistakes with the editor (the visual appearance of our message was crap).
in design, the fastest way to learn, is to learn via mistakes.
this we did.
we gave it a try, the spacing went wrong, and we learned how to make it better (next time, it will be perfect).

:-)
finally, here is our previous email, with improved spacing.
sorry for the double mail, thanxthanx for your patience + see you tomorrow)

dear all,
it is now sunday afternoon in foggy and wintry milan...
music is playing out loud,
in this precise moment, madness rules our playing list.

...naughty boys in nasty schools...
...headmasters breaking all the rules,
...having fun and playing fools,
...smashing up the woodwork tools...

what to say?
the song from before was: "night boat to cairo",
and we are now stuck on "baggy trousers"

(eh... ...we love ska).
:-)
now,
about design 101.
our team is working pretty hard on getting everything set for our course to begin tomorrow morning.
the first videopostcard/letter/brief we will be released any soon...

are you ready?
to be honest,
we are tense and nervous.
normally when we teach, a big class "means" around 100 students.
it's quite unbelievable to have more than 27.000 of you receiving this email.

... can't seem to face up to the facts
...i'm tense and nervous and i...
...can't relax
:o
anyway,
tomorrow morning at 9.00 (gmt + 01.00),
we will send you the link to a special package (videopostcard + letter)
there, you will find all the info you need:
instructions, what, when, why, who, how, lalalala...

from tomorrow,
every morning (berlin time), you'll get the videopostcard + letter.
101 days for 101 postcards.

:-)
a couple of things to remember before to start:
  • the goal for design 101 is to set up a global community
  • design 101 is not a competition
  • you've never done it before, we've never done it before: we all need to be patient
you don't know how the platform will work.
we don't know how the platform will work.

it will take some days for all of us to understand and adjust all kinds of technicalities.
let's use this first week of activities to fine-tune to this new medium.
it is a work-in-progress.

:-)
what else?
see you tomorrow!

 Homework n. 1
In every unit, we will use this special section for sharing our exercises with each other.

The Monday / Saturday / Sunday units usually won't have particular "hands-on" tasks to complete, but we can still use this "mini forum" to show and tell things along our journey!

LETTER n.1
Week no. 1: Intro. Monday.
Greetings from Berlin, having a pic-nic in the garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie.
Here we are, back to where everything started. Are you ready to start our Design 101 introduction week?

Together, we’ll test everything out and check if you like our moods, attitudes, and things we want to share with you... By the way, this Neue Nationalgalerie, where we are, is a really impressive space (well, of course it is, Mies van der Rohe designed it...). If you happen to go to Berlin, check it out for yourself!

In a normal course, the quiz is at the end of the learning period. In this course, we flipped things around and have it at the beginning (much more interesting).

Question of the day: Design, how does it start? Today’s question is the typical designer’s question.
It is so typical that it has a given typical answer, “Get to work! Now!” (Remember, all good designers are hard-working people.)

Homework n.1
Today, it is very simple. First, go through the quiz and answer the questions in order to
understand more about yourself and Design 101. Then, prepare yourself for the week.

By the way, apart from your notebook, we assume you have a digital camera (or smartphone) connected to your computer and then to the Internet. That’s it.

What will you learn? If you prepare the whole week now, you will organize yourself and your time (in respect to Design 101). One hour per day. Reasonable and viable. Learn to organize your time.
Design can be understood as organizing our time in the best way possible. Good designers can design space and things. Amazing designers design time, starting with their own.

Something to remember: Design is organizing time and things.

Here’s another quote: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” said Lao Tzu.
Although he was not a designer, his thinking is extremely precious and relevant to us (quite impressive that he lived some 2.500 years ago).

Design is foremost a language. A language shared by designers all over the world. Things, people, places we all know about. Once we have a shared language, things become nice, fun, and meaningful. Conversations start up quickly and flow nicely. Of course, like any other language, “design” is in constant change. Hence, to try mapping it for good is an impossible task.
